A much anticipated and hotly contested annual event at the Sydney Gallery School, the Meadowbank College Association Art Award is imminent. Exhibited in the See Street Gallery, and now in its 21st year, the Award offers Fine Arts students an opportunity to compete for $2000 in prize money. Divided into a $1000 first prize, $500 second prize and $100 prize for each Fine Arts discipline, this year it will be judged by Alison Clark, Curator from Willoughby Council Incinerator Art Space.
Winners will be announced at the opening on Wednesday 7^th September, 5.30 – 7.30 pm. The exhibition offers the opportunity for the local community to purchase from an interesting and diverse range of student work, including painting, drawing, sculpture, photography and printmaking.

Hello and welcome to ACOUSTOOPTICALDINORATORIO. You may have participated in the first performance and exhibition in the Delmar Gallery and if so welcome back, if you did not, then welcome to a new exhibition/performance and audio experience. The details of which and the essential dates follow herewith …….

ACOUSTOOPTICALDINORATORIO is the inspiration of the Irish artist, Alan Healy who states…“In keeping with our duty as artists to change the inherent form and destiny of any matter we use to express ourselves … in my work, I try to elaborate on parts and sensations of this experience; that is, to bring attention to the materiality of James Joyce’s work and perhaps reveal something of the alchemy that he alone understood.”

ACOUSTOOPTICALDINORATORIO is an exploration of sound and vision set against the backdrop of James Joyce’s monumental literary work Finnegans Wake.

So what is ACOUSTOOPTICALDINORATORIO ? If we break down the title, the music is the ACOUSTO, the OPTICAL are the canvases, the DIN is the cacophony when all of the musicians play their own pieces of music simultaneously and the ORATORIO is the chatter afterwards.

The performance and exhibition features the musical and visual works of around 40 artists. Each artist will play 30 seconds of music, until all have played. This section will be followed by 2 minutes where all the artists play their own piece simultaneously sounded in by the timekeeper. At this time various others join in, conductors, ballet dancers, viewers with movie cameras, and more.

So how will it all sound? Nobody knows yet. How will it look? The artists with musical instruments will be seated in a spiral facing out. The vocalists will form an inner circle facing out. There will be four conductors, at the north, south, east and west aspects of the circle. They will wear earphones and conduct whatever they are listening too and there will be canvases by all of those participating surrounding the performers.

One of the many pleasures of Finnegans Wake is that it still remains poetry and chaos, rather than something analysed and known to be safe, this event and exhibition, with the visual and associations of the visual, sound and the associations of sound may be as meaningful as it may seem meaningless; this remains to be seen and hear this work we listen, participate and wait.

This year it is on again as an event and introduction to the Northern Sydney Institute of TAFE Meadowbank Campus College of Art Alumni at the See Street Gallery.

See Street Gallery’s newest exhibition, Paper Trail, is made up of an exciting range of works on paper. All the work is by final year Diploma of Fine Arts students, who are specialising in drawing, printmaking and photography.

Paper offers the artist a platform for creating and playing with space and dimensional possibilities. Two- dimensional works on paper create the illusion of form and its multiplicities. The moment a mark is made on the (predominantly) bleached white surface, the picture plane is perforated and space and volume is created. Paper is an absorbent, receptive and malleable material. It can be embossed, torn and collaged. It can receive and repel ink, paint and drawing media.

The exhibition demonstrates all of these qualities of work on paper, with a wide range of styles, content and materials. Like other successful exhibitions held at the See St Gallery, works are available for sale at accessible art prices. A closing exhibition party will be held on Thursday 23rd June from 12 until 1.30 pm, with the artists present to talk about their work.

See St Gallery is part of the Sydney Gallery School at Meadowbank TAFE. The Sydney Gallery School offers a range of accredited arts courses as well as short courses for the public.

Constructed Nature 2nd Year Diploma of Fine Arts Painting Exhibition opens this Thursday May 26 at See Street Gallery.

Constructed Nature covers two projects undertaken by 2nd Year Diploma students in Semester 1 this year. Students in the Monday class created assemblages composed of found objects which were then translated into paintings, meanwhile the Friday class have undertaken studies of landscape and site at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Sydney.

The exhibition covered art works in all art forms celebrating the lives of women and to celebrate 100 years of International Women’s Day.

Ultimo Project Inc. Upspace

Upspace is the exhibition space for the Ultimo Project, an Artist Run Initiative which showcases the work of both members and a range of external exhibitors including artists, curators and members of the Addison Rd Community Centre. The expansive exhibition space, featuring 3.6 metre high walls, is also the entrance space to the 16 studios in Hut 24 and open days visitors are invited to visit the 16 artists in residence after viewing the current exhibition. Last Tuesday October 19 the Advanced Diploma (3rd Year) Painting students held the Opening of their annual exhibition, Emergence, at Brush Farm House, Eastwood. Brush Farm House is an historic house run by Ryde Council and it forms a wonderful backdrop to the works on show. Covering a wide range of styles and subject matter, each students’ body of work demonstrates a strong spirit of engagement and enquiry. A good crowd attended the opening, with family members & friends of proud exhibitors enjoying both the art and the great spread provided by the students. Many thanks go to Judy Marsh for her well-honed skills in organising student commitees and for liaising with Paul Graham from Ryde Council.

The Contested Landscapes of Western Sydney

This Thursday 19 August we have an exciting exhibition opening between 5.00-7.00pm at the See Street Gallery. The Contested Landscapes of Western Sydney and is a collaborative venture between the ANU School of Art, Canberra, CSIRO Climate Research Centre and the Sydney Gallery School, Meadowbank College.
The artists participating in the exhibition undertook site visits to areas in the greater western Sydney region where food production still takes place, but is under threat from ever expanding urban development. The work produced examines sustainability, land use and health/social issues in ways that are creatively engaging and thought provoking.

Opening Speech by Sandy Edwards

Body Language, Image + Text and Spatial Tension opened Thursday June 17 at See Street Gallery. This end-of-semester show represents the joint efforts of several second year Diploma classes plus the Certificate IV Museum Practice students who were responsible for getting the original hang in place.
Body Language, Image + Text is showing the work of Geoff Kleem’s Photomedia class and Tony McDonald’s Interdisciplinary Drawing class. Students in both of those classes were mobilising multiple sets of skills garnered in both the studio classes and Isobel Johnston’s Professional Practice class. Courtney Kidd’s Professional Practice class has mounted Spatial Tension, a small exhibition featuring a mural style hang at the back of the gallery. The photography students had invited well known photographer, and more recently curator, Sandy Edwards to open the show and she made a warm encouraging speech along the lines of where-to-from-here which was packed with good advice for aspiring artists. Complimenting students on the high standard of the work and the layout of the show in her speech, she also generously spent time with individual students talking to them about their work. She was impressed with the high energy levels in the room and commented to me that there was a real buzz of excitement about the art school.
The Body Language part of the title is represented by large photographic prints pinned to the wall which encircle the show. There’s a great sense of fun in the photographs which all speak of a growing confidence and shared humour within the group. Stacey Barker wins my award for wit, marrying her bland descriptive titles, Lamp, Screen and Candlestick with images which depict each of the objects named masking the identity and vulnerability of the human models supporting them. Robert Fryirs gives Stacey a run for her money with his drier, but nevertheless funny Bookshelf, in which Allen Jones’ female furniture of the 60s is invoked (and inverted) as the hapless male model (Robert himself, I suspect) becomes the bookshelf for a populist consumer. Balancing precariously on his back is a range of paperback titles, with two apt titles taking centre-stage, Erica James’ Act of Faith and Tony Barber’s Long Way Til You Drop. Edith Heidmann’s arresting work channels Nan Goldin in the candid Hallie and 15:37 January 29; also worthy of mention are Catherine Joel’s intensely colourful and amusing Matryoshka Dolls I and II which recreate a set of Russian nesting dolls with living models. The painted faces and bodies swathed in (Mum’s) cerise pinch-pleated curtains conjure the mayhem of a kid’s dress-up session in which no household item is out of bounds.
Displayed on plinths in the central part of the gallery is the Image + Text component of the show – books produced in Tony’s drawing class. These too display a lateral approach to the book brief and offer a range of styles – Suzanne Cullen Glass’ Can I Play? presents a short continuous narrative on meticulously cut violin-shaped pages. Deploying an apt traditional children’s book-illustration style this work tells the story of a child learning to play the violin. Diane Gerlach’s Exit/Extinct presents the word EXIT in block caps – each letter’s shape cut out of hard-cover books which stand erect, straddling her drawing of extinct species; and Catherine Joel has created a wire-bound book – Wrong Way, Go Back – which opens into a yard depicting refugee incarceration in detention centres.
Spatial Tension, Courtney’s Professional Practice class show had a central brief of mounting an exhibition and performing the accompanying tasks: designing an invitation and producing a catalogue essay. Uniting their disparate works in two mural-style hangs, this group have also acquitted themselves well.
All those involved in this joint enterprise are to be congratulated on their efforts. Given the continually changing landscape in which this show evolved it is a real credit to all of you.

Raw Existence is an exhibition of artworks by Third Year Fine Arts students at Sydney Gallery School. Working from different perspectives and using a range of media, the artists have explored diverse interpretations of this exhibition theme.

Rawness as the ‘natural and true state’ is evident in works which explore the basic, natural state of existence – either as geometric forms, raw architectural elements or images of existence at the basic, cellular level.

The raw, undisguised nature of strong human emotions is the subject of some works, while others relate to life experiences and changes where people are often ‘raw’ and vulnerable.

Kate T Deacock, Sydney Gallery School Advanced Diploma Graduate, is participating in the carriageArtworks 2010 exhibition at Carriageworks at Wilson Street, Eveleigh, Sydney.

Opening on 25th March, this is a FREE annual event, celebrating artwork and art culture from Sydney’s city fringe. The exhibition will feature work on canvas, sculpture, photography, mixed media, video art, performance art and textiles. Over a month, the exhibition will unfold into a multi-faceted public showcase of creativity. A program of artist talks, tours and themed forums will spark conversation around making art, making a living from art, and art from the consumers’ point of view.

This course is suitable for potential or currently employed art workers & volunteers in the
Art Gallery and Museum sector of the Arts industry. The course will provide broad skills, knowledge and understanding of museum and gallery practices.

The Certificate IV in Museum Studies addresses the skills required by museums and
galleries in five core function areas:

• exhibition display
• conservation and maintaining a collection
• research
• communications
• exhibition planning and implementation (curatorial development)

Two 2nd Year Diploma of Fine Arts Sydney Gallery School students have recently been awarded significant art prizes.

Kylie Bowles has won the inaugural $5000 Hornsby Art Prize with her sculpture Obsession's Playground, a timber sculpture produced in her Sculpture elective class. More than 520 entries were received from across the state - congratulations to Kylie for an outstanding result.

Frances Yip has won 2 Silver and 1 Bronze award at the 2009 International Aperture Photography Awards. The award is an online international photography prize and is a great result for Frances to have her talents recognised in such a prestigious award. Congratualtions Frances!

Noel Chettle Memorial Art Prize 2009

The judging of the Noel Chettle Award for 2009 has recently taken place at the Newcastle Art School, Hunter Street campus, Newcastle. The judges this year were Peter Wilde, from the Industry Skills Unit - Ultimo, Matthew Tome, Head Teacher Fine Arts at Newcastle Art School, and Trevor Weekes, a distinguished Newcastle artist, art teacher and critic. Included in the show were Sydney Gallery School students Miriam Cullen, Maritza Noa-Cabrera, Kristine Pedler & Shirley Peters.
The two encouragement awards, of $400 were awarded for excellent work to 2nd student Year Miriam Cullen, and 3rd Year student Shirley Peters. The panel commended the finalists on their high standards of skills, presentation and professional level of the work exhibited.

From Meadowbank to Mudgee

Fairview ArtSpace is a beautiful old brick home built in the early 1900s. The building has had a number of roles in its life and has currently been renovated to offer gallery space and an area for creative workshops. Helen Harwood is the lessee and the driving force behind Fairview ArtSpace. From August 28 - September 27 a group of Sydney Gallery School students participated in an exhibition of paintings, prints, drawings and sculptures organised by 3rd Year Meadowbank student (and Mudgee resident) Kay Norton-Knight. Kay did a wonderful job motivating students, transporting works and whipping-up enthusiasm. The opening night was well attended and there were many sales. The exhibition coincided with the 2009 Mudgee September Wine Festival. Lilian's Enhanced Forest Wins 1st Prize

Congratulations go to 3rd Year Painting student Lilian Wong for winning the 1st Prize at the 2009 Meadowbank College Association Art Award. The 2009 MCAAA judge, Michael Dagostino chose Lilian's work for its raw and striking approach to Australian landscape. The 2nd Prize went to Frances Yip and the first year discipline prizes were printmaking Robert Bayliss; photography Lianna Ly; drawing Diane Gerlach; sculpture Antonia Mrjak; and painting Robert Fryirs.

2009 Meadowbank College Association Art Award

A much anticipated and hotly contested annual event at the Sydney Gallery School, the Meadowbank College Association Art Award is imminent. Exhibited in the See Street Gallery, and now in its nineteenth year, the Award offers Fine Arts students an opportunity to compete for $2000 in prize money. Divided into a $1000 first prize, $500 second prize and $100 prize for each Fine Arts discipline, this year it will be judged by Michael Dagostino from Parramatta Artists Studios. Winners will be announced at the opening on Thursday 13th August, 4.30 – 7.30 pm. An exhibition mounted by second year students in Professional Practice at the Sydney Gallery School, Meadowbank College, will offer art works "and some".

Reflecting the diverse backgrounds and art practices in the group, the exhibition promises a wide range of subject matter, media and approaches. In addition, the exhibition’s paintings, drawings and sculpture will be shown in ways that offer insights into the contexts in which they were created and the artistic process itself. Different facets of the creative process – for example the tools, settings, inspiration, stimulants – will be revealed in a playful and thought-provoking way.

Join us at the opening at 6pm on Monday 25th May in the See Street Gallery, Meadowbank. There will be snacks and drinks and live music. The exhibition will be open until Friday 5th June.

The Kimbriki Experience

The Environment is a hot topic on everyone’s lips, and it was the topic surrounding the Kimbriki exhibition at the EcoForum Conference at the Australian Technology Park, 28/30 April 09. In February, students from the Sydney Gallery School were invited to join the artists from ANU to visit Kimbriki Recycling and Waste Disposal Centre, a solid dry waste landfill and recycling centre operated by Warringah Council, in collaboration with Manly, Mosman and Pittwater Councils.
The field study and exhibition theme addresses the re-use and recycling of materials, and after an inspiring orientation by the Kimbriki staff, we were set free to explore. Our artistic brainwaves were charged, rousing many ideas. Cars, vans and trailers were fully loaded with a wealth of recycled materials before returning to our studios. We had only six weeks to produce our Eco Artworks and the pressure was on. Students from all subject disciplines were involved, and produced a diverse range of artworks, each with its own personal environmental message.
This was an incredible opportunity to be part of a very worthwhile cause. Many thanks to John Reid (ANU) and the Kimbriki centre for inviting us to participate in this truly unique and rewarding project.

Rew wins another International Print Prize

Sydney Gallery School Printmaking teacher, Rew Hanks has won a second International art prize within the last six months. Rew was winner of the Grand Prize at the 8th International Print Biennale at Bharat Bhavan in Bhopal India in 2008 and has now won a Purchase Prize at the The 2nd Bangkok Triennale International Print and Drawing Exhibition. This is an excellent achievement as there are approximately 4000 entries from many different countries. Silpakorn University in Bangkok organises the Bangkok Triennial International Print and Drawing Exhibition, which is scheduled to be held every three years to offer Thai and foreign artists…” an opportunity to display their most recent works and enhances the interaction and exchange of cultures among people, not only from countries throughout the region, but through out the world”. The exhibition is on from from May 14 to June 14, 2009 at Bangkok Art and Culture Centre, Pathumwan district Bangkok, Thailand, from May 14 to June 14, 2009. Rew will be travelling to Bangkok to receive the award from Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakkri Sirindhorn. Congratulations Rew!

Starting Grid is an impromptu exhibition of geometric grid paintings currently displayed in the See Street Gallery. The show aims to extend the explorations of pictorial space taking place in its abstract paintings by locating them as components of a three dimensional space in the gallery.

Designed as an exploration into paint technologies, the brief called for students to develop 12 small paintings in acrylic and 6 small paintings in oil, then to select and enlarge one of the acrylics. All paintings were to be based on the grid format and use a range of painting techniques and painting mediums to investigate visual effects in pictorial space.

Taking these initial explorations into pictorial space, Starting Grid deploys a selection of works as vehicles to drive the investigation into another visual dimension. By locating them in actual space they themselves become planes interacting with floor, wall and ceiling. As well as engaging with one another, they also engage spaces within and without the imagery. Hung by a student committee, the exhibition offers an opportunity to explore this visual territory in another arena.

I Think I Shall Never See a Billboard as Lovely as a Tree
coordinated by Jennifer Leahy & Vincent Watson*

Hazelhurst Regional Gallery & Arts Centre is presenting the fifth billboard project for its gardens from 28 March to 21 June 2009.

Ogden Nash once said, "I think I shall never see a billboard as lovely as a tree". This quotation encapsulates the sensibilities contained in this selection of new imagery by five contemporary photo artists, Leahy+Watson (NSW), Beverly Veasey (NSW), Alison Langley (VIC) and Katthy Cavaliere (NSW). The exhibition showcases four new large scale photographic works presented within the natural environment of the gardens at Hazelhurst. This compounding showcase of nature within nature highlights the personal curiosities and representations of the land created by each artist.

An exploration of another kind is undertaken by the collaborative artist duo Leahy+Watson in their work titled Greyscale, which investigates the reduced palette that arises when visual perception is subdued. The viewer is asked to share the vision of the unseen. The subtitles that are amplified through this limited visual environment and enhanced sensory state.

Hazelhurst is located at 782 Kingsway, Gymea in Southern Sydney. It is five minutes walk from Gymea Railway Station (Illawarra Line) and a 35 minute drive from Sydney's CBD.

One Up

Our first show for 2009 was One Up, an exhibition of selected 2008 Stage 1 student work in Painting, Drawing,Printmaking, Photography and Sculpture. The exhibition was held from Thursday 12th February to Thursday 26th February 2009.

The One Up show was an opportunity to see the outstanding work produced by Stage 1 students in 2008. The lunchtime opening with BBQ lunch was a great launch to the 2009 academic year and also the program of exhibitions for the See Street Gallery. It was also an opportunity for our new students to meet with the (now) Stage 2 students and to see the quality of their work.

Printmaker and teacher Rew Hanks has never been one to make life too easy for his printmaking students at The Sydney Gallery School, Meadowbank Tafe. Last year he had them producing three dimensional works around the theme of snowdomes. This year he has had them all hard at work producing prints that incorporate a working clock mechanism, so their prints not only demonstrate an understanding of their medium and look fantastic, but they tell the time too!
Even a Stopped Clock Tells the Right Time Twice a Day is the second annual collaboration between Hardware Gallery and Rew Hanks at The Sydney Gallery School, which sees students and the Gallery working on the same theme from different directions. 40 completed works by the students and Rew himself will be shown alongside artworks produced by ten of Hardware Gallery’s regular artists.
With such a nebulous theme as time, both Hardware Gallery and Hanks decided to keep things simple – to have the art tell time. The rest was up to the individual as far as the content and concepts that were covered. As Gallery owner Lew Palaitis explains “To get over 50 artists trying to pick apart a single topic would border on the tedious. Things would be done more than once – or done to death. We’ve always enjoyed throwing out an idea to an artist that maintains a little latitude for them. All we told them for this project was: make your artwork tell the time. And off they went”
All the artists have responded with enthusiasm and creativity to complete an exhibition that will have your mind ticking over and over.

TAFE NSW Showcase 2008 has been launched at the Downing Centre Sydney.
Sydney Gallery School Advanced Diploma painting students Penny Bobbin, Kate Deacock, Mary Lapsley, Kerry Lonsdale, Jane Robinson, Marisa Vumbaca & Lilian Wong have a selection of paintings in the display cases in the Downing Centre Court Complex in downtown Sydney as part of the annual TAFE NSW Showcase exhibition.

The Downing Centre is located in the Sydney central business district, on Liverpool Street between Elizabeth Street and Castlereagh Street. It sits opposite the south-west corner of Hyde Park and Museum railway station. The works will be on display until January 17, 2009.

Arthur McIntyre ~ A Very Uneasy Balance

Works by the late Arthur McIntyre to show at See Street Gallery, Meadowbank TAFE, Sydney.

Meadowbank TAFE’s See Street Gallery will present an exhibition of selected works by Arthur McIntyre (1945-2003) entitled, A Very Uneasy Balance. The exhibition will open on June 12th and continues until June 26th, 2008. Curated by 3rd year fine arts students at The Sydney Gallery School, the exhibition will feature a diverse range of work including mixed media collage, drawings and paintings.

McIntyre exhibited widely during a career spanning more than four decades. His work is represented in most State Gallery collections as well as in business and private collections both in Australia and overseas.
Somewhat neglected since his death, McIntyre’s work is on the verge of a reassessment. Eight works were included in the Bent Western exhibition at Blacktown Arts Centre recently, an exhibition of gay and lesbian artists with connections to Western Sydney.
McIntyre’s art practice challenged conventional art making techniques and as a non conformist he was unafraid to examine difficult themes.
The work selected for A Very Uneasy Balance dates from the mid 1970s to the late 1990s, and includes Syphilis and Vegetable Parasites (circa 1975), a mixed media work from his controversial Survival and Decay series. Token Poses 1, which was selected by Arthur Boyd as a finalist in the Dobell Drawing Award in 1993 and large scale works from one of his last solo exhibitions Life, Sex, Death, Decor at the Holdsworth Galleries, Sydney in 1995. Some work never previously exhibited will also be shown. All work is for sale.
McIntyre made a significant and extensive contribution to contemporary Australian art not only as an artist but also as a curator, critic, writer and teacher. McIntyre was the Sydney art critic for The Age and The Australian. He was a regular contributor to art publications such as Art Monthly, Art Australia and Craft Australia and was author of Resurgence and Redefinition: Australian Contemporary Drawing (1998) and Australian Contemporary Collage (1990).
McIntyre’s promise was recognised at a young age by Jeffrey Smart who awarded him the ABC’s Commonwealth Art Award in 1962. He later won a scholarship at the National Art School, and spent time in Paris as the Artist-in-Residence at the Power Institute of University Sydney Studio at the Cite Internationale des Arts after being awarded a Visual Arts Board Travel Grant. A mid career survey was proposed by James Mollison, then Director of the National Gallery of Victoria, in 1991. This exhibition should have reinforced McIntyre’s reputation as an important contemporary Australian artist but was cancelled after a corporate sponsor pulled out in preference for a sports event.
McIntyre was known for drawing attention to artists and exhibitions otherwise overlooked. The See Street Gallery would like to continue this tradition. A Very Uneasy Balance will, it is hoped, be the first of a series of exhibitions that will re-examine artists who, during their lifetime, did not attract the attention their work deserved.

JUMAADI
Jumaadi: working from personal memory

Jumaadi grew up in a fish farming area on the coast of East Java and also spent time living in a mountainous area of the region in his early twenties. At the end of 1996 he migrated to Australia and began studying English and a part-time photography course at the National Art School. Jumaadi enrolled as a full-time student in the Bachelor of Art program at NAS in 1998, majoring in painting. He was awarded First Prize in Waverley Art Prize 2002, and his drawing was Highly Commended. In 2003 he was Highly Commended at "Art on the Rocks" and spent time in Indonesia exhibiting at the French Cultural Centre in Surabaya and establishing a studio near his parent’s home in Sidoarjo. In 2004 Jumaadi was invited to become an Artist in Residence at Cowra Regional Gallery and the South Project in Melbourne and in the same year his painting received a special mentioned by the judge of the Mosman Art Prize. In 2005 Jumaadi enrolled as a student in the NAS Master Of Fine Art by Research exploring issues of "Mapping Memory", won first prize in a Small Painting Art Prize at Soda Gallery and held his first exhibition at Legge Gallery.
Jumaadi toured throughout NSW, Queensland and Victoria in 2006 telling his personal story to hundreds of schools and art galleries. He also started to run workshops and teach art at the Waverley Woollahra Art Centre and Sydney Community College. In 2007 he was invited to exhibit in Indonesia by the French Consulate in Surabaya and won the John Coburn Award for Emerging Artists in the Blake Prize.
Jumaadi’s work is about retelling stories based on personal memory and the folkloric tradition in the form of drawings, paintings, story telling, weaving and installation. Jumaadi is now a casual lecturer at the National Art School

Ceci n’est pas une pipe
Plumbing meets Fine Arts at the See Street Gallery.

You are warmly invited to contribute the plumbing-inspired, collaborative drawing project, Ceci n’est pas une pipe, currently on show at See Street Gallery.

Ceci n’est pas une pipe is a process-based drawing exhibition taking inspiration from the aesthetics of plumbing, zen gardens, childhood boat races, toilet humour and construction diagrams, set to grow over the three-week exhibition period.

Participants are invited to make drawings, build boats, take a ride down the guttering or a swim in the boat pond, before hanging their results out to dry, adding to the growing exhibition which will celebrate its finale on Thursday March 27, between 5.30 and 6.30 pm.

Ceci n’est pas une pipe is the second in an on-going series of exhibitions sourcing inspiration from our surrounding faculties here at Meadowbank. Thanks go to the staff and students of the Plumbing Section for the loan of their resources.

Affordable Art Show Breaks Records

The Sydney Gallery School's annual Affordable Art exhibition was an outstanding success, with previous sales records being well and truly broken. There was a great respose from the graduating students, with a wonderful array of original art works on sale. Astute buyers arrived early on the Opening night to take advantage of the unique works on sale at bargain prices.

A big thankyou to the organising committee who made the event possible;

Jane Robinson, Caz Haswell, Pam Frew, Fran Deady, Eleanor Brown, Anya Pesce, Jason Andison, Ilya and Steven Deronne. Also thanks to the exhibitors and staff who helped mind the show.

Explorations of space, line, composition and shape are wonderfully explored in the exhibition Image & Artefact, featuring drawing and sculpture by graduating students from the Advanced Diploma in Fine Arts at Sydney Gallery School. Opening on Thursday November 1 to an appreciative audience, the show traverses a wide range of materials, techniques and conceptual concerns. A big thankyou to all the students involved and to SGS teachers Lynne Eastaway, Anthony Cahill, Caz Haswell and Michael Buzacott for all the work that went into putting the show together.

The exhibition finishes November 15.

Embracing the Moment

A big crowd warmly welcomed the opening of the Sydney Gallery School's Advanced Diploma (3rd Year) Painting students' exhibition, Surface Tension, at the See Street Gallery on Thursday 18 October. The show was opened by special guest Bob McPhillips, who encouraged the students to 'embrace the moment' in their art practice and to recognise their significant achievements being presented in the work on show. A high level of engagement in the processes of painting has resulted in a dynamic exhibition where colour, texture and feeling are explored in a wide range of styles & techniques.

Nothing like a Dome!

Sydney Gallery School 3rd Year students celebrated in style recently with their final year show, Nothing like a Dome!, at the See Street Gallery. The Opening night was abuzz as people entered the special raffle with a chance to win a specially editioned print by printmaking teachers Elise Benamane, Rew Hanks and Elizabeth Hunter. The Snowdome prints were once again popular with the audience and a wide-ranging selection of printmaking techniques and styles were on show, demonstrating the depth of experience amongst the students. Our thanks go to the organising students who helped hang the show and prepare for the opening and to Rew Hanks for all his efforts in making this a successful exhibition.

Kathy’s Variations Wins Award

Celebrating the 2007 MCAAA Prize

The annual Meadowbank College Association Art Prize was launched on Thursday September 6. The opening night was a big success, with many students, their family and friends attending.

The special guest judge for this year was artist, Joe Frost. Joe was impressed with the range and variety of the entrants' work, but it was Keith Neighbour's brazed steel sculpture, Mombassa (pictured), that stood out to him as the winning entry. Joe described Mombassa as "... a very beautiful sculpture which unfolds in space like a three-dimensional drawing".

The 2nd Prize of $500.00 was awarded to Kerry White for her painting, Cosmos, which Joe described as "..... an ambitious composition which is simultaneously earthy and ethereal, successfully evoking the ‘cosmos’ of the title."

The five prizes of $100.00 each for 1st Year students in each discipline area go to;

Sydney Gallery School Fine Arts teachers Margaret Ackland, Belinda Ward and Rew Hanks have made the finals of two of Sydney's most prestigious art prizes. Belinda has been selected as a finalist for the Dobell Drawing Prize, while Margaret & Rew have been selected as finalists for the Blake Prize for Religious Art.

The annual staff show at the Sydney Gallery School this year is titled, Related Duties, playfully drawing the connection between teaching and art making practices. The exhibition features works across a number of disciplines, from sculpture and painting to digital imaging and drawing. The diversity of approaches reflects the range and experience of the artists on staff at the college and has been warmly greeted by students and the public.

Jennie Pry - Village Life Lines

Sydney Gallery School Third Year Painting student Jennie Pry was recently selected as one of only ten finalists chosen from a field of one hundred and thirteen artists in the second Sydney, City of Villages Art Exhibition and Prize.
All Australian artists working in the mediums of painting, printmaking and drawing were invited to submit to the Sydney, City of Villages Prize. Artworks by ten finalists were exhibited as giant posters on JCDecaux Street Furniture Sites (17 July- 30 July) and in a gallery exhibition at Pine Street Creative Arts Centre, Chippendale (17 July - 3 August).
Sydney City Councillor Marcelle Hoff said; "The images encapsulate Sydney's villages beautifully. We see the city skyline over a clothesline in Redfern, the iconic Badde Manors Café in Glebe, a verdant Sydney Park, a bicycle on King Street in Newtown, the bow of a ferry on Sydney Harbour, and walkers across the Bridge and Five Ways in Paddington."
The finalists were selected by a distinguished panel of judges; Sydney artists Wendy Sharpe and Ben Quilty, and Jackie Menzies, Head Curator of Asian Art, Art Gallery of New South Wales.

Leahy + Watson Selected for Sunshine Coast Art Prize

Sydney Gallery School Technical Officers Jennifer Leahy and Vincent Watson have been selected for the Sunshine Coast Art Prize 07 at the Caloundra Regional Gallery. They are part of a select group of 40 artists selected from over 500 entries. Jennifer & Vincent's collaborative photographic work Louise #2 (image above) is from the Forest Work series.
